There are many items like opals, pearls and oxidized and plated metals that need special care. You are usually safe using a soft jewelry polishing cloth. Oxidized metal will turn white if you drop it in liquid silver dip. Most other jewelry will fare well in a liquid dip made for fine jewelry, but be cautious. Diamonds can take a bath of vodka and come out shiny but never use a toothbrush with toothpaste as it can scratch the stone.
